KIN Food Institute: New Online Course for Food Lab Employees

From January 2018, the KIN Food Institute will be offering an online seminar for employees in food laboratories: MicroQLab. The course focuses on the requirements of DIN EN ISO / IEC 17025, which is the basis of work in all testing and calibration laboratories worldwide, and closes knowledge gaps in the correct implementation of quality management requirements. The course content is divided into three modules that build on one another and can also be booked individually. The first module is dedicated to the basics and deals with the requirements for laboratory management from organization to purchasing to internal audits. The professional implementation of all steps in microbiological examinations is explained in detail. The management topics selection and qualification of employees as well as standards in laboratory equipment are also dealt with in the basic course. Module 2 deals with the requirements for analytical procedures and the validation of microbiological samples. Among other things, the teaching block deals with the different types of methods, including Type IV, and shows how the results are correctly validated. The third module teaches how to properly control and maintain laboratory equipment and how to maintain and verify the calibration of thermal equipment. The participants work on the content at their own pace. In order to receive the certificate, a final test must be taken online. The three MicroQLab modules are provided on the Moodle learning management system.

The content of the e-learning course was developed by four European institutes. The project management was at the Spanish technology center AINIA, the KIN developed the rules for handling analytical tests. "Due to the many years of experience in the field of education and the associated technical school, the KIN food institute represented an important addition to the European team," says Inge Jeß, head of the KIN food institute. "How do you evaluate microbiological samples and which processes have to be observed in the event of deviating results? These are examples from the everyday life of accredited laboratories, which we illuminate very specifically. Anyone who deals with questions relating to accreditation, quality assurance, validation of test procedures or the performance testing of culture media will gain a deep insight into the standard-compliant implementation with MicroQLab 320 euros.
