Study »Interim Management '

The topic Interim management is new to many companies. Temporary problem solvers who take over the management of projects or programs for temporary vacancies, win, given the lack of

Specialists and executives are becoming increasingly important for the success of companies. The use and acceptance of interim managers vary between the various branches and industries.

Together with the interim management service provider Atreus, Fraunhofer IAO has recently carried out a study on the use of interim managers in mechanical and plant engineering. The aim of the study was, on the one hand, to find out how companies from the mechanical and plant engineering sector assess the requirements for top management functions. On the other hand, it should be checked whether interim management can be a solution to meet the growing flexibility requirements of companies. Only managing directors and heads of large functional areas who themselves decide on the use of management functions were surveyed.

The results show that in the course of the collapse in orders in 2009, companies have developed a high level of sensitivity for organizational adjustments to fluctuations in capacity. At the same time, the greatest challenge is seen in overcoming the shortage of specialists and managers. However, only a good ten percent of those surveyed currently use interim management services themselves to counter bottlenecks in management staff.

According to the study, the use of interim managers is assessed as particularly successful when it comes to taking on tasks beyond day-to-day business. Above all, activities that require special expert knowledge, such as the management of change processes or restructuring, can be taken over by interim managers. A summary of the main results of the study can be obtained from the specified contact.
