After 2022, SÜDPACK is once again at the top of the annual WirtschaftsWoche innovation ranking in 2023: With an innovation score of 384,0, the manufacturer of high-performance films and packaging concepts took 9th place this time Top 10 of the most sustainable medium-sized companies in Germany.

“Despite the rampant mood of crisis, the most innovative medium-sized companies in Germany are showing how technical innovations can be developed into businesses and how markets can be conquered from niches,” is the credo of the Munich consultancy Munich Strategy, which once again develops the products, services and services on behalf of WirtschaftsWoche evaluated the development power of a total of 4.000 companies.

There is a reason why SÜDPACK is ranked top in both rankings. The global family business, which has its headquarters in Ochsenhausen, Swabia, consistently focuses on two core areas: innovation and sustainability. “Last year we were able to set new standards in the market, particularly with our innovative, material-efficient and at the same time recyclable monostructures such as the PP or PE-based PureLine as well as an equally sustainable packaging concept for the pharmaceutical industry,” emphasizes Carolin Grimbacher, managing partner of the group. In addition, SÜDPACK invests in mechanical and chemical recycling in order to close cycles in the packaging industry and reduce the consumption of natural resources.

Innovations in the current year 2023
This year, too, the film manufacturer's commitment to circular economy impressed the Munich consulting company. As part of our own recyclables management, high-quality compounds with recycled content are produced from plastic waste, which can be used, among other things, in injection molded parts for a wide range of applications. For a customer project, for example, SÜDPACK produced granules for injection-molded housing components for cordless vacuum cleaners with a recycled content of over 40%.

Last but not least, SÜDPACK invested in an LCA tool in 2023 in order to be able to take into account the environmental impact of packaging over its entire life cycle and in all facets and to provide customers with optimal advice based on well-founded, fact-based analyses. “The impact categories that we have identified as relevant for our films include, in addition to the consumption of fossil resources, the acidification of soils, the formation of fine dust, the photochemical ozone formation as a threat to human health and the ecotoxicity of fresh water,” says Carolin Grimbacher.

The analysis of WirtschaftsWoche
In order to be able to analyze the innovative strength of a total of 4.000 medium-sized companies, the Munich consultancy first evaluated their annual financial statements and presentations. The 400 best companies were then examined in more detail based on interviews with managing directors, customers and competitors and a so-called “innovation score” was determined. One third of this is based on sales and profit development and two thirds on the innovative strength of the respective company. The product developments that were brought onto the market were taken into account here, as was the amount of annual spending on research and development. How innovative the respective medium-sized company is classified in the market was also an important criterion in the selection.

“Innovation is the key to success and a strategically important instrument. We therefore see the renewed top position in the WirtschaftsWoche ranking as a call to action. We can only maintain and expand our leading position in the market if we think about tomorrow today. “Ecologically, economically and socially,” summarizes Carolin Grimbacher.
