At Kaufland, husbandry levels 3 and 4 are running

On the way to more animal welfare in livestock farming, Kaufland has reached another target: Already every fifth meat item at Kaufland and thus more than 20 percent of the entire fresh meat range of the private label comes from the more animal welfare-friendly husbandry levels 3 and 4. This includes not only pork but also meat from poultry and beef. This makes the company one of the leading providers of meat from higher husbandry levels in the food retail sector. Kaufland's goal is to continuously expand this sustainable, animal welfare-friendly range.

“Many of our customers want an animal welfare-friendly range. We want them to buy these products as a matter of course, so we already offer a large selection of fresh meat from levels 3 and 4,” says Robert Pudelko, Head of Sustainability Purchasing. "This is the only way we can work together to achieve a sustainable improvement in animal welfare in livestock farming."

Kaufland offers pork, poultry and beef in level 3 husbandry under the Tierwohl private label K-Wertschatz. The animals have more space than required by law, access to an outdoor climate, organic activity materials are available to them and their feed is free of genetic engineering. The pork and beef are supplied by selected partner farmers of Kaufland Fleischwaren, who deal intensively with the subject of animal welfare. For the additional work that the farmers have to do as a result of the change in animal husbandry, they receive a corresponding additional payment. By participating in the K-Respect for Animals quality meat program, Kaufland enables its partner farmers to secure sales markets and qualitative growth over a long period of time.

Since last year, Kaufland has been the first food retailer nationwide to offer self-service sausage products from the more animal-friendly level 3 husbandry system under its own brand K-Classic. In addition, the company offers over 100 milk, cheese, sausage and meat products as well as eggs under its own animal welfare brand K-Wertschatz, all of which are certified according to recognized animal welfare standards and programs.

The sustainable, animal welfare-friendly design of the range is an important concern for Kaufland. The food retailer therefore took a variety of measures at an early stage to improve livestock farming across the board and to enable more responsible production of products of animal origin. Kaufland has been a founding member of the German Animal Welfare Initiative (ITW) since 2015. Those responsible along the entire process chain have come together in the ITW: from agriculture to the meat industry to food retail. Their goal is to achieve long-term improvements in animal welfare.
