First animal protection commissioner of the federal government

Last week, at the suggestion of Federal Minister Cem Özdemir, the Federal Government appointed Ariane Désirée Kari as Federal Government Commissioner for Animal Welfare. She is currently the deputy state animal welfare officer in Baden-Württemberg and will take up her new position in mid-June 2023. Federal Minister Cem Özdemir: "I am pleased that in Ariane Kari we have succeeded in recruiting a proven expert with many years of animal welfare experience. I am convinced that her work will provide important impetus and that the discourse and dialogue in society as a whole in the field of animal welfare will be supported will accompany and promote technical expertise. My ministry is thus implementing another point from the coalition agreement. This shows how important the subject of animal welfare is to the federal government. Many federal states have already set out with appropriate state commissioners. Ariane Kari: "In my work as the Federal Government Commissioner for Animal Welfare, I see a great opportunity to advance animal welfare. I am very much looking forward to giving animals a voice at federal level and, for example, to representing them in legislative processes. In addition, I will keep coming back focus on grievances in the handling of animals so that they can be remedied by the responsible authorities.Another focus will be to be available as a contact for organizations and citizens who deal with animal welfare or animal husbandry and to take their suggestions into account. Last but not least, I will provide more knowledge about the needs of animals with educational and public relations work - because knowledge protects animals."

The representative should work politically and professionally independently. The main tasks include:

  • Advice and support for the federal minister responsible for animal welfare on issues relevant to animal welfare in the form of recommendations and statements
  • Participation in federal government projects in the field of animal protection and participation in the further development of animal protection at national, European and international level
  • Cooperation and exchange with the authorities of the federal states responsible for the enforcement of animal welfare regulations and the state commissioners for animal welfare appointed in the federal states
  • Processing of inquiries from citizens on general and current animal welfare issues
  • Exchange with national and state-wide animal welfare and animal owner organizations
  • Presentation and communication of the work of the commissioners in public
  • Preparation and publication of a regular activity report on the work of the officers

Ariane Desiree Kari was born in Pforzheim in 1987. Since 2016 she has been working in the staff office of the state animal welfare officer at the Ministry of Food, Rural Areas and Consumer Protection in Baden-Württemberg, where she took over the position of deputy state animal welfare officer in 2017.

After successful approbation as a veterinarian in 2012, Ms. Kari qualified in 2015 as part of further training to become an official veterinarian and acquired the additional veterinary designation animal welfare in 2019. She was also able to train as a specialist veterinarian for public veterinary services.

Ariane Kari has also been a veterinarian specializing in animal welfare since 2022. In addition, from 2012 to 2014 Ms. Kari worked as an employee of the staff unit for food safety in the regional council of Tübingen in the field of veterinary drug monitoring and from 2014 to 2016 she was the deputy head of the animal welfare department in the veterinary office of the Rhein-Neckar district (Wiesloch).

Ariane Kari will take office on June 12, 2023 and will present herself publicly at an appointment at the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture.
