840.000 euros for healthier poultry farming

As part of its federal livestock program, the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) is funding the joint project to improve animal health in broiler farms with around 840.000 euros. The Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture, Claudia Müller, today handed over the funding notice to those involved in the project at the University of Rostock. The funding makes a valuable contribution to the sustainable minimization of the use of antibiotics and in particular so-called reserve antibiotics.

The joint project, consisting of the University of Rostock, the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, the Hanover Veterinary University Foundation and the Friedrich Loeffler Institute, is dedicated to improving animal health in broiler farms by optimizing biosecurity and overall hygiene. The aim is to identify risk areas and optimization potential in farm management through targeted knowledge transfer between animal owners and to learn from farms with low antibiotic use. This should help to reduce the frequency of bacterial infections and thus reduce the need to use antibiotics in the long term.
