Eat less meat

The trend towards “less meat” continues. In 2022, people in Germany consumed around 2,8 kilograms less pork, 900 grams less beef and veal and 400 grams less poultry meat. A possible reason for this could be the continuing trend towards a plant-based diet. According to preliminary information from the Federal Information Center for Agriculture (BZL), the per capita consumption of meat was still 52 kilograms and was therefore around 2021 kilograms lower than in 4,2. It thus reached the lowest value since consumption calculations began in 1989.

Application of new calculation method from 2023
In the course of 2023, the BZL, which is part of the Federal Office for Agriculture and Food (BLE), will adapt the methodology for calculating the meat supply balance on the basis of new scientific findings on the flow of goods and current factors for converting meat consumption into meat consumption. As a result, deviating information is to be expected, which may be higher than according to the method used up to now. For better comparability over time, the BZL will then also use the new method to calculate and present the supply of meat over the past ten years.
