DS Smith and MULTIVAC present an innovative corrugated cardboard packaging solution

Consumers continue to advocate sustainability. Brands and companies are therefore increasingly facing a value-oriented consumer. These buyers prefer products that have the least possible negative impact on the environment. In the search for more sustainable solutions, MULTIVAC and DS Smith have joined forces to develop and produce ECO Bowl, an innovative solution for fresh food in modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) based on corrugated cardboard. The companies have entered into a strategic partnership to provide food production and retail customers across Europe with maximum scalability of the ECO Bowl solution. ECO Bowl is a fully recyclable corrugated cardboard tray that is covered with a skin and an upper plastic sheet, which reduces the plastic content by up to 85% compared to a conventional plastic tray.

In order to eliminate unnecessary packaging, and since every second European sorts and recycles more than five years ago, the plastic skin and top film at ECO Bowl can be easily removed for disposal so that the corrugated cardboard tray can be recycled . ECO Bowl enables customers to implement it easily and effectively, it is designed for processing on MULTIVAC thermoforming packaging machines and traysealers and can guarantee or even improve the shelf life compared to conventional MAP packaging for fresh food.

ECO Bowl has already been tested on the market with Amidori. The German manufacturer of vegetable meat replacement products has opted for ECO Bowl and successfully implemented the solution at the end of 2019.

Marc Chiron, Sales, Marketing & Innovation Director Packaging at DS Smith says: “We are very pleased with the success that Amidori is having with the ECO Bowl. This is a great example of the benefits customers can get when they choose to implement this new generation of packaging innovation into their delivery loops. The innovation behind ECO Bowl shows the progress DS Smith is making in promoting greater sustainability within retail. Through our partnership with MULTIVAC, we are committed to promoting the circular economy on a larger scale. "

Bernd Lasslop, Vice President Partner Products & Consumables at MULTIVAC adds: “We are constantly working on innovative solutions and packaging concepts with which we can reduce the amount of packaging materials and meet the current requirements for resource efficiency and recyclability. ECO Bowl is another example of this effort. "
