foodwatch demands meat tax

Berlin, November 11, 2022. On the occasion of the United Nations World Climate Conference (COP27), Dr. Chris Methmann, Managing Director of the consumer organization foodwatch: "Federal Minister of Agriculture Cem Özdemir must use the world stage in Cairo to campaign for an EU-wide meat tax: We need a CO2 tax on meat, cheese and the like to reduce the consumption of animal-based foods reduce. The EU can only achieve its goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2050 if animal numbers are roughly halved. Less meat production is good for the climate, good for the environment and good for the animals that are systematically made ill in industrial factory farming.

The one-sided fixation of the German agricultural industry on the cheapest possible meat and dairy products is climate policy madness. The meat and dairy industry is one of the biggest climate killers. In Germany, around three quarters of emissions in agriculture can be traced back to animal husbandry. We will only master the climate crisis if we produce massively less meat and milk.”
