The trainees at the Kaufland meat factory in Heilbronn also received support from over 250.000 bees this year. Their job was to deliver honey for an exclusive honey ham. The ham was produced independently by the trainees and will be available exclusively at Kaufland at the end of October.

Under the motto “azubi@work”, Kaufland trainees have been demonstrating their skills in projects time and again since 2017. The idea of producing a fine honey ham came about at the Heilbronn meatworks last year. The project was a complete success because the ham was completely sold out within a very short time. The project's trainees are involved in all production steps, from raw meat to the finished product, its marketing and on-site sales.

This summer, too, several bee colonies moved to a 3.000 square meter flowering meadow that was created especially for them, right next to the meat plant. The trainees looked after the bees together with a beekeeper. The harvested honey and pork from German origin were then used to produce the cooked ham specialty. “The trainees are our specialists and managers of tomorrow. That's why it's important to us that they can take on responsibility during their training and that we regularly carry out exciting projects with them. They were able to bring in their own ideas for the honey ham and we tried out different recipes until we really had the perfect product,” says Thomas Riedl, managing director of the Kaufland meat factory in Heilbronn.

Honey ham will be available at the deli counters of around 270 Kaufland stores at the end of October, particularly in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria.

As a large trading company, Kaufland offers a wide range of training, entry-level and development opportunities. In addition to the administrative locations and branches, the company operates seven logistics locations, four meat plants and six regional companies in Germany. All newcomers can look forward to practical training in which they will get to know the multifaceted world of retail and be prepared for their future specialist and management positions. In order to address the shortage of skilled workers, the company has been relying on the development of young talent from within its own ranks for years. The employees benefit from extensive training courses for professional and personal development, from assignments in interface areas and from on-the-job training measures.
