90 years of Nubassa Gewürzwerk: Quality in the third generation

Nubassa, a global supplier of high-quality spices, seasoning mixtures, marinades and technological products for the production and refining of meat and sausage products, looks back on 90 successful years. The company was founded in Mannheim and today supplies the food and meat industry, the butcher trade, as well as restaurants, caterers and commercial kitchens in over 40 countries worldwide from its headquarters in Viernheim in southern Hesse. The portfolio now includes more than 4000 products.

Nikolaus Effler, fascinated by exotic spices and distant countries, gave his newly founded company the name Nubassa based on the East African Nuba tribe and initially supplied butchers with standardized spice mixtures and auxiliary materials. Today Nubassa is an internationally active company. The quality promise of only grinding excellent raw materials from the best growing regions in the world still applies. Through innovation and investment, Nubassa also developed technologies such as the Nubafrost® cold grinding process, which guarantees particularly gentle and aroma-protecting processing. Today Marcus Effler, the grandson of the company founder, and his brother-in-law Michael Mohr run the company and ensure that Nubassa always has the right products on offer for current spice trends, but also for the changing requirements of the food and meat industry.

Marcus Effler: “Being successful as a spice mill means always being close to trends and the wishes of consumers. Today, consumers demand exotic and ever-new spice mixtures. At the same time, the trend is towards meat alternatives, and overall the demand for natural ingredients is at the top of the wish list. We help our customers meet these requirements and see ourselves as a partner for good taste, technological support as well as quality and safety.”

Michael Mohr adds: “We are continually investing. Two years ago we put a 10-ton mixer into operation in a separate extension and invested extensively in lifting systems so that our employees no longer have to heave around heavy loads. Next, we are expanding our halls and storage capacity. We also see our sustainability strategy as an ongoing investment, because we are constantly implementing new projects so that we can make noticeable progress in all areas of sustainability.”

Nubassa currently employs around 50 people and can rely on a global network of partners and distributors. The portfolio is constantly being supplemented and adjusted. To ensure consistently high quality, reliable availability and traceability, Nubassa works closely and continuously with the best spice importers and suppliers. Quality control is carried out in our own laboratories, and regular and comprehensive certifications and audits ensure the highest level of product safety. At the Viernheim location, Nubassa's specialists develop new spice mixtures, decorative spices, herbs, marinades, grill oils, sauces and breadings, as well as a wide range of tools for the production and refining of meat and sausage products. In addition, it offers other auxiliaries and additives including flavors, colors and emulsifiers as a classic version or without additives, for example lactose, flavor enhancers or preservatives. At the headquarters in Viernheim, the team also develops individual, customer-specific solutions and conducts seminars and training courses.

Roger Effler, son of the company founder Nikolaus Effler and managing director from 1971, died at the beginning of August 2023. His son Marcus Effler has been responsible for purchasing, production, product development and quality assurance since 1996, while Michael Mohr has been responsible for sales, marketing and human resources since 2015.
