Livestock husbandry and climate protection in focus

The non-profit Tönnies Research is again announcing the Bernd Tönnies Prize, which is endowed with 10.000 euros. Media professionals from German-speaking countries can apply with their publications on the subject of animal welfare in livestock farming until the end of 2023. "We want to support journalists who deal with it in a well-founded manner," explains Mechthild Bening, former curator and responsible for this award within the society. “We are not looking for quick news, but well-researched formats. Since good research requires a lot of effort, this price is so attractive.”

The award is given for journalistic work in the areas of print, TV, radio and online. When evaluating, the jury focuses in particular on diligence in the research, an appealing presentation of the topic and the generally understandable communication of even complex relationships. The articles are intended to make it clear that the media improve the level of knowledge about animal welfare in livestock husbandry through their reporting, both among animal keepers and in the general public, and thus contribute to bringing the aspects of livestock husbandry relevant to animal welfare into focus.

In addition to animal welfare in agriculture, this call for tenders also focuses on the effects of livestock farming on the climate. Media professionals can apply with one or two contributions. The publication period of the publications to be submitted must be in the years 2022 or 2023. The application deadline is December 31, 2023. The award ceremony will take place as part of a symposium on March 11, 2024 in Berlin. The jury can decide to distribute the prize money to different journalists. The committee consists of representatives from various specialist areas and works independently. The legal process is excluded.
