Less salmonella in fattening turkeys and in turkey meat

BVL publishes report on zoonoses monitoring 2012

The EU-wide measures to combat salmonella in poultry stocks are proving successful: fewer salmonellas were detected in fattening turkeys at the slaughterhouse than in previous years. This is shown by the results of the zoonoses monitoring report published by the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL). However, the results on the occurrence of zoonotic pathogens along the food chain also show that improvements in slaughter hygiene are still required. The resistance studies show that bacteria found in livestock have higher rates of resistance to antibiotics than bacteria isolated from wild meat and plant foods.

As part of the 2012 zoonoses monitoring, a total of 5.293 samples from primary production, slaughterhouses and retail outlets were tested by the federal states’ testing facilities for the presence of Salmonella spp., Campylobacter spp., Listeria monocytogenes, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), verotoxin-producing E. coli (VTEC) and commensal Escherichia coli (E. coli). 3.515 bacterial isolates were obtained and further characterized in the National Reference Laboratories and tested for their resistance to antibiotics.

Butcher knives under RFID control

Every day, tools such as knives and sharpening steels as well as protective clothing for processing food are used in the meat processing industry. According to the relevant guidelines and regulations, special requirements apply here with regard to traceability and hygiene. In practice, however, it is often difficult to reliably control compliance with the regulations. The reason: Most of the documentation is done manually and is therefore error-prone and time-consuming. Radio frequency identification, or RFID for short, could help. It enables a clear assignment of employees to their tools as well as the automatically controlled collection of data in all process steps.

Fines from the QS scheme flow into research

QS Science Fund supports research projects to reduce the use of antibiotics and to avoid piglet castration

The newly established QS Science Fund supports science and research projects in the agricultural and food industry. It is fed by contractual penalties that scheme participants have to pay if the QS requirements are violated. The QS Fund has awarded 111.000 euros so far in 2013. The funded projects deal with reducing the use of antibiotics, alternatives to piglet castration and the sustainability of the value chain.

The funded projects should bring benefits for the entire value chain. The results are also made publicly available. The QS Science Fund was founded by the shareholders of QS Qualität und Sicherheit GmbH. It pursues exclusively charitable purposes. This is done in particular through the co-financing of research projects, the award of research contracts and the implementation of scientific events. The decision on the allocation of funds is made by a specially set up board chaired by Prof. Dr. Pure Doluschitz.
