Profit-based pay for managers is counterproductive

A higher performance-related remuneration of the top management in the form of shares, options or bonus payments does not lead to a higher company performance. As Prof. Margit Osterloh and Katja Rost from the University of Zurich show in a new study, such pay-for-performance payments can even have a counterproductive effect on performance, as they suppress intrinsic motivation and induce self-interest to be maximized.

In view of the current global financial market crisis and the accounting scandals, it is becoming increasingly difficult to follow the standard economics thesis that performance-based remuneration leads to more performance. Prof. Margit Osterloh and Katja Rost have therefore examined whether higher variable management remuneration actually increases company performance. They combined the results of 76 scientific studies from 123767 examined companies and found: "The amount of the variable CEO income explains the company performance by only 1,2 percent", summarizes Katja Rost, employee at the Chair for Organization and Technology and Innovation Management, the results together. This means that the high level of bonus, share and option payments to the CEO has now practically no influence on the economic success of a company.

A comparison of antihypertensive agents: preliminary results are available

Proven diuretics are the active ingredients with the best documented benefits

Lowering high blood pressure can prevent complications such as strokes, kidney or heart damage and extend life. As studies show, this is mainly possible with the help of medication. However, the question of whether there are differences between the antihypertensive agents remains unanswered. The Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG) has therefore carried out a comparative study of the advantages and disadvantages of the drugs used to lower blood pressure, so-called antihypertensive drugs. The benefit assessment by IQWiG is intended to answer the question of which antihypertensive agent should be used to start therapy. Whether only one active ingredient or several should be used initially is not the subject of this report.
