AVA has grown against the trend

Cranes with record sales - market buying in Moscow above expectations

The Bielefeld-based retailer AVA Allgemeine Handelsgesellschaft der Verbraucher AG has closed the 2003 financial year with an increase in Group sales (external sales including VAT) by 148 million or 2,7 percent to around 5,6 (previous year: 5,4) billion. "Thus, we have slightly exceeded the targeted increase in sales of 2,5 percent despite the pronounced slump in consumption and performed significantly better than the industry," said AVA Board spokesman Helmut Metje on Tuesday in Bielefeld. For the first eleven months of 2003, the Federal Statistical Office reported a decline in sales of 1,1 percent in the German retail sector.

In the fourth quarter, which was particularly difficult for the industry as a whole, consolidated revenue decreased by 0,3 percent year-on-year. Sales of the sales companies remained virtually constant at minus 0,1 percent.

CMA radio spot is well received

Christmas radio contribution of the quality community "master craftsmanship" with great response

Just in time for Christmas, the CMA produced a radio report for the quality association "Master craftsmanship", which provided consumers with interesting tips on how to shop and prepare a festive roast. In addition to a master butcher, the cook and food stylist Susanne Vössing, known from the Vox program "Kochduell", also contributed to the event. From the point of view of a top chef, she made a fiery plea for the purchase of quality from the butcher's specialty store.

This editorial service offer seemed to have met exactly the needs of the targeted broadcasters, as the previous record number of 42 radio stations in total demanded the contribution to integrate it into their program. In the process, the Federal Republic of Germany was provided with almost comprehensive coverage - from Radio NORA in Kiel to antenne südbaden in Freiburg and from Aachen 100, one to Radio WSW in the Saxon white water.

Veal scarce and expensive

Cleared wholesale stocks at the beginning of the year

When buying veal, consumers must expect persistently high expenditure. Despite the slowdown in demand, prices did not decline as expected after the turn of the year. The reason: The veal stocks in the wholesale markets were almost cleared after the Christmas business, and the supply of new slaughter animals is now limited after the extensive slaughter at the end of last year.

In the first half of January, on average, 17,62 euros per kilogram were charged at the shop level for fresh veal escalopes, 36 cents more than in December and 32 cents more than in January 2003.

The battle pig market in December

Again significant price losses

On the slaughterhouse market, the decline in prices from the previous month continued at the beginning of the month, as the supply of animals for slaughter continued to be very high. In the pre-Christmas week, however, the large supply then met with a brisk readiness to accept butcheries. The decision of the EU Commission to grant aid for the private storage of pork again created a positive mood on the market. In the last weeks of December, the supply of slaughter pigs noticeably decreased. It thus met the limited needs of the slaughterhouses, and the quotations were able to hold their own at the level reached by the turn of the year.

On average, the males for slaughter pigs of the meat trading class E were just 1,10 euros per kilogram slaughter weight, which were eleven cents less than in November and twelve cents less than in December 2002. On average, all grades E to P slaughter paid with 1,05 euros per kilogram also eleven cents lower prices than in the previous month; the previous year's level was missed by twelve cents.

The slaughter cattle market in December

Offer higher than last year

The supply of slaughter cattle was particularly plentiful in the first half of December. It thus clearly exceeded the sales opportunities, because at the beginning of the reporting month the demand for noble and noble cuts did not correspond to the usual expectations before the Christmas holidays. Sales were very sluggish, not only in the consumer sector, but also mail order beef did not bring any relief worth mentioning. The available range of slaughter cattle could therefore only be marketed with price concessions; the prices for young bulls in particular came under considerable pressure. It was not until the week before Christmas that the upturns were no longer so great, demand increased and prices firmed up. However, that wasn't enough to match the average payout price of the previous month or year.

For young bulls of the meat trading class R3, the producers received an average of only 2,21 euros per kilogram slaughter weight in December; that was nine cents less than in November and at least 38 cents or almost 15 percent less than a year ago. For class R3 heifers, the average price of EUR 2,23 per kilogram was two cents lower than in the previous month and one cent lower than in December 2002. The proceeds for slaughter cows in category O3 fell by a further eight cents from November to December to just 1,45, 15 euros per kilogram; the comparable level of the previous year was thus missed by XNUMX cents.

Pork often on sale

Hearty and inexpensive

Inexpensive cuts of pork are currently often available to consumers very cheaply in special offers from retailers. Eisbein or Dicke Rippe are sometimes available from as little as 1,99 euros per kilogram; for pork belly, fresh coarse bratwurst or rolled roast you have to pay about two to three euros. Boneless roast pork neck or pork goulash cost just under four euros per kilogram.

The normal shop prices are also at a continued consumer-friendly level, because the German market will also be extensively supplied with pork this year. At the beginning of January, pork chops at the retail level cost an average of 5,65 euros per kilogram, 17 cents less than at the beginning of 2003, 42 cents less than in 2002 and even 80 cents less than at the beginning of January 2001.

Chicken prices remain cheap

German production continues to grow in 2004

German consumers can also count on consumer-friendly chicken prices in the coming weeks, because the supply remains well enough. As a result, prices similar to those of the previous year are emerging, which on average were significantly lower than in 2002 and 2001. Fresh chicken schnitzel, for example, was available for EUR 2003 per kilogram on average in 7,89; in 2002 they cost EUR 8,52 per kilogram, in 2001 - in the year of the BSE crisis on the beef market - even 9,44 euros.

German gross domestic production, which increased by around three percent in 2003 to an estimated 1,07 million tonnes, is expected to continue to grow. The imports from the Netherlands, our most important foreign supplier, are unlikely to return to their previous level after the outages caused by avian influenza, but more goods can be expected from the acceding countries. This will limit the price scope of the providers upwards.

The veal slaughter market in December

Notes easily attached

Although the slaughterhouses had slightly more calves available for slaughter in December than in the previous month, the greater supply was met with mostly brisk demand. The payout prices therefore firmed up slightly, but without reaching the high level of the previous year.

At the purchase level of the mail order slaughterhouses and meat products factories, the weighted federal average for slaughter calves billed at a flat rate increased by two cents to 4,87 euros per kilogram of slaughter weight in December, according to a preliminary overview. The prices paid in December 2002 were thus undercut by 14 cents.

Cattle population continues to decline

As reported by the Federal Statistical Office, there were 2003 million cattle in the stalls of agricultural businesses in Germany in November 13,3, including 4,3 million dairy cows, and 26,5 million pigs, including 10,4 million fattening pigs. This is shown by the preliminary results of a representative survey of the livestock numbers of cattle and pigs on farms as of November 3, 2003.

The number of cattle decreased by 2002 animals or 383% compared to November 000. With two exceptions (December 2,8 and May 1990), the decline in the number of cattle, which has continued since 1994, has continued. In the period from November 2001 to November 2002, the number of animals in the categories "female slaughter, farm and breeding animals" (- 2003 animals or - 131%) and "young cattle" (- 000 animals or - 4,3%).
