Better a portion than a whole duck

Portion-appropriate sales are gaining importance

When selling large poultry to consumers, cuts such as breasts or thighs are becoming increasingly important. Especially on the duck market, the portion-based offers are significantly increasing. At the Gänsemarkt the share has been quite high for years.

In the notifiable German slaughterhouses with a slaughter capacity of at least 2.000 animals per month, almost one-fifth of the slaughtered ducks were split in the previous year, five years ago, in the year 1997, this share amounted to only about five percent. In addition come the. statistically unrecorded quantities in the cutting plants. Within the international supply segment deliveries are also increasing: the proportion increased from 16 percent in 1997 to almost 23 percent in 2002.

Demand growth before Christmas

Preview of the agricultural markets in December

On the German agricultural markets, there is often a lot of demand up to the Christmas holidays. The focus is on high-quality cuts of meat, seasonal poultry, eggs and various dairy products. But other products can be discontinued quickly. Immediately before the turn of the year it should then go quiet again. Livestock slaughter prices are expected to have little headroom in December. Chickens and turkeys are rated stable to firm, as are most dairy products. The demands for eggs are at a high level. At the table potato market, slight mark-ups are possible again. Precious meat pieces preferred

Looking to the Christmas holidays, meat market demand in the coming weeks will increasingly focus on the high-quality cuts of beef, veal, lamb and pork. But the sales of cheaper consumer goods should run steadily in the cold season.

Current ZMP market trends

Livestock and Meat

In the meat wholesale markets, wholesalers and bursters were much more reluctant due to subdued demand for beef. Prices remained largely unchanged. Slaughter cattle were abundant, as slaughterhouse demand was limited due to inadequate sales and revenue opportunities for beef. The quotations for cattle of all categories therefore gave way. The Federal funds for young bulls of the meat trading class R3 and for cows of the class O3 sank by four cents each on 2,28 Eu-ro and 1,51 Euro per kilogram slaughter weight. When shipping cow guns to France, German suppliers also had to accept price reductions. And even with the sales of young bull meat to southern Europe, the revenue prospects are very limited. The export of beef to Russia was on the back burner and only at yielding prices. If beef demand does not receive impetus in the coming week, further price weaknesses for young bulls and slaughter cows are to be expected. In the meat wholesale markets, supply and demand for veal were mostly balanced. Overall, however, sales were low and prices remained unchanged. The slaughter offer was not too big, but was good enough for the demand. For flat-rate calves, as in the previous week, around 4,90 euros were paid per kilogram. The quotes for calves remained largely unchanged.

Again found BAB cow in the UK

As animal-health-online reports, the wave of British BSE cows that were born after the animal meal ban came into force in August 1996 for all animal species is continuing. BSE has now been officially diagnosed in a cow born in October 1996 on the Isle of Wight. Only last week the British reported six BSE cows that were born after the complete ban on meat and bone meal. The total number is more than 60 .

Already in July 1988 was banned in Great Britain animal meal for feeding of cattle. The so-called "Born after the ban" (BAB) cases were declared between July 1988 and August 1996 with the mistaken or illegal feeding of meat-and-bone meal or pork and poultry feed to cattle. An official explanation for the "BAB" cases is not available. The use of animal fats in milk exchangers as a possible source of infectious BSE prions is discussed in the art.

Antibiotic residues in chicken eggs

On the Rueckstandsfunden of antibiotics in chicken eggs from laying hen farms in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern explain the Deputy Group Chairman Michael Mueller and the agricultural policy spokesman of the SPD parliamentary group Matthias Weisheit:

It must be cleared up without any problems, as it came to the contamination of the eggs with the residues of the drug Lasalocid-Na. The use of this anti-parasiticum is prohibited in laying hens. It must therefore be determined in what way the laying hens have come into contact with the antibiotic.

The economic situation in the Federal Republic of Germany November 2003

Economic output in Germany rose again in the third quarter of 2003 for the first time since the third quarter of 2002. According to the first results of the national accounts, the gross domestic product (GDP) increased by 0,2% after adjusting for seasonal, calendar and price adjustments (*), after having declined by 2003% in the second quarter of 0,2. Real GDP in the third quarter was 0,2% lower than in the corresponding period of the previous year. There was no calendar effect. The expansion of macroeconomic output was due to a significant increase in the export surplus, which was based on both a strong increase in exports and a decline in imports. Domestic use, on the other hand, declined, but was more than offset by the higher export balance.

Real domestic demand, seasonally and calendar adjusted, fell by 1,6% in the third quarter compared to the previous quarter. This weak development is primarily due to the renewed decline in consumer spending (-0,6%), the slump in equipment (-3,6%) and a negative contribution to growth in inventories (-1,1%). In contrast, government consumption (+ 0,4%) and construction investments (+ 0,9%) supported domestic demand in a quarterly comparison. The growth impulse of the external contribution to the gross domestic product was 1,8%. That is the highest value since reunification.

Constitutive Meeting of the Advisory Council on Genetic Resources

Künast expects scientific support for the conservation and sustainable use of genetic diversity

Federal Minister for Consumption, Renate Künast, sees herself coming a good deal closer to her goal of developing increased initiatives for the conservation and sustainable use of genetic diversity for nutrition, agriculture and forestry. With the establishment of the Advisory Board for Genetic Resources, she appointed experts from various disciplines to provide scientific support and advice on her policy. “This is an essential part of a comprehensive concept with which we want to counteract the loss of biological diversity in agriculture, forestry and fishing on a broad front. At the same time, we will do everything we can to actively use the potential of this diversity with a view to sustainable development, diverse nutrition and new economic fields of activity, ”said Federal Consumers Minister Renate Künast.

As the recently published red list of endangered animal and plant species makes clear, biological diversity is increasingly threatened due to unsustainable use, among other things. This also applies to the diversity of species that are used or can be used in agriculture, forestry and human nutrition. According to Künast, a great potential for adapting agricultural and forestry production to future requirements and for a diverse diet, the production of biological active ingredients, renewable raw materials and renewable energy sources may be lost.

3 years BSE in Germany

Extensive measures to minimize risk, but no reason to be all-clear

Currently, 287 BSE cases are officially confirmed in Germany (2000 = 7, 2001 = 125, 2002 = 106, 2003 = 49, as of: 20.11.). Since confirmation of the first BSE case of a German-born cattle on the 26. November 2000 were performed in Germany around 7,5 million BSE rapid tests. Most of the previous cases of BSE have been found by a special surveillance program in those animals that have died, have been or are being slaughtered or had clinical symptoms. 92 of previous 287 BSE cases have been detected in clinically sound slaughter cattle using rapid tests.

In order to minimize the risk, extensive protection measures have been taken in all areas of rearing, slaughter and processing of ruminants. These protection and surveillance measures complement and overlap their objectives and, in the current state of knowledge, ensure the greatest possible health protection for consumers.

Producer prices increased by 1,7% in October

The index of producer prices of industrial products in October 2003 was 1,7% higher than in October 2002. As the Federal Statistical Office further informs, the index in October 2003 remained unchanged compared to the previous month.

Simultaneously with the figures for October 2003, the Federal Statistical Office presents the results of the recalculation of the producer price index on the index basis 2000 = 100. Based on the structures of domestic domestic sales in the new base year 2000, all indices were recalculated from January 2000. This results in the following changes in the annual tax rates for the year 2003 compared to the previous index basis 1995 = 100:
